PETERBOROUGH, ON - It took seven games and a last minute goal, but the Peterborough Lakers are heading to the Mann Cup. After a hard fought 11-9 win at the Peterborough Memorial Centre in game seven against the Brampton Excelsiors, the Lakers will now play host to the New Westminster Salmonbellies in a best-of-seven series at the Peterborough Memorial Centre beginning Friday night.
Both teams exchanged blows in the first period with the scoring being knotted up at 4 apiece heading into the dressing rooms after twenty minutes.
Brampton took control in the second period as they rattled off three goals to lead 7-6 heading to the third period.
However, much like the rest of the series, the Lakers were not to be counted out. In front of over 3,900 fans the Lakers were able to tie the game early in the period and then take the lead for good with 1:04 remaining in the game on a beautiful shot by Shawn Evans that beat Excelsior's goaltender Anthony Cosmo over the shoulder. Steve Toll put the game out of reach with 13 seconds left in the third when he intercepted a Brampton pass and ran down the floor all alone and slid the ball into the empty-net that put the finishing touches on a remarkable series.
The Lakers will now prepare to take on the Salmonbellies beginning Friday, September 10th at 8:00 PM.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes have a busy weekend ahead of them before they enter the Christmas Break of what has been a season that has not met the expectations of many.
Sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, the maroon and white have a tough weekend in which they will battle the Brampton Battalion tomorrow night before a home-and-home series with the Ottawa 67's on Friday and Saturday night. The team received some good news this week as the Switzerland Junior team has granted forward Lino Martschini permission to play in tomorrow night's game against the Battalion but request he sit out the rest of the weekend. The Petes have also called up Rickey Buehler to play tomorrow night against the Battalion in order to have eighteen skaters in the lineup.
With just eight wins in their first thirty games, the Petes will look to hit double digits in wins heading in to the Christmas Break beginning tomorrow night, 7:00 PM at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
